The Jewish cemetery in the city of Chernovtsy

The Jewish cemetery is a component of Historical and cultural reserve « The Cemetery in the Zelena street ». The Jewish cemetery has been created in 1866 under the decision of municipality Chernovtsy . The author of the project engineer Reli which wanted to create a monument of landscape gardening culture of city from the Jewish cemetery. The territory of a cemetery is broken for quarters which are planned and make the uniform closed complex. For today of them it is totaled 137.

The territory of a modern cemetery occupies about 14 hectares. There are two entrances: the central entrance from Zelena str. and minor from Lebenska str. By calculations, in territory of the Jewish cemetery it is buried more than 100 thousand city dwellers, many of which have played the important role in cultural and economic development of city. The important branch of a history of development became breakdown for quarters which has ended at the end of 80th years of 19 centuries.

The beitkadishim building on a cemetery is constructed in 1905, architect Jozifom Fjunkeljom on means of the Jewish religious community. It will consist of 4 premises: a ritual hall, a mortuary, office and ritual shop.

The administration of a cemetery, plans to make its restoration as about 30 % of burial places are in the destroyed or delapidated condition. Restoration will consist of three parts: strengthening of landslip area, cleaning of territory and directly restoration of buildings, obelisks and monuments. Also on prevention of cases of vandalism a few of actions is planned for territories of the Jewish cemetery.
